Dodgeball and Meetup.com
The Boca Raton Dodgeball Meetup has been gaining new members all the time! Many neighborhood kids in the area of the park we play at have come to be regular dodgeball players. On Thursday, May 8th, we are planning our next big meetup. Definitely come out and play with us, because this meeting will be a can’t-miss-event.

January News
Happy New Year Boca Raton DodgeBall members!
I’m going to be offering a prize to the first person that shows up to the next event. The prize is none other than the DVD “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story”. To qualify please RSVP at http://dodgeball.meetup.com/231/ and also RSVP regardless if you’re coming or not. There’s no shame in RSVPing “Maybe” or “No” and a reason is nice, but not completely necessary.
The games have been getting pretty large. I’m considering renting a second court in a new location if the games continue to grow. I’ve also purchased 6 NEW dodgeballs from Sports Authority that should arrive in the mail by the second meetup in January. Now we’ll have 16 balls. Check them out here.
The next event will be at the same location as before “Sandpine Park” @ 6:45pm on Thursday January 24th. I look forward to seeing everyone!
Also, we started a second meetup on the Last Thursday of the month. This was because some members were begging for more Dodgeball. Nobody has RSVPed for the second meetup in January yet. I do not think anybody knows it exists, so this is the official first announcement. Here’s a direct link to the RSVP page for January part II (Jan 24)
Sincerely,
Charlie Lee
The Second Boca Raton Dodgeball Meetup
Thanks to all that showed up regardless of the looming rainout threat. As it turned out it sprinkled a little bit of rain at about 6:45pm for a minute or two, then we played rain-free all night. We had a big turn out of about 16 meetup.com members and guests, and then some local boys finishing football practice joined the frey. We had a good time, and some highlights included:
1) My co-worker Henry get blasted in the face by Jay (the biggest and tallest guy on the court).
2) Jay 1-on-1 versus a neighborhood kid that had to be about 12 years old and about 4 feet tall.
3) A random little girl of about 5 years old cheerleading on the side lines.
The First Boca Raton Dodgeball Meetup
Our first meeting was a great success! The rules were explained, and we started playing pretty quickly. Several people showed up a little bit later and jumped right in the next game. I think we played about a dozen games or so before everyone kind of collectively decided our arms and quads felt like jello. Oh, and during our breaks everyone talked and drank some almost cold, imitation gatorade that was provided by me. That will definitely be improved upon next time, sorry. You have to admit, that when you’re playing that hard, anything tastes good though, right?
Here’s all the photos and movies from the meeting, however I will clean this up and install a gallery with streaming video soon. I just need some time.
Although I’ve uploaded the official Dodgeball Federation rule book to the meetup.com website, I don’t really think they’re “fun” rules like we used. We played 2 variations of the catch rule, but all the other rules were pretty solid and we maybe had one or two moments where we had to decide a rule on the spot.
Here’s our Boca Raton Dodgeball FUN rules:
- Anyone can play.
- The Honor system is in effect.
- Teams are best chosen by a random number system (odds/evens).
- The teams are separated by a line in the center of the court, where you can not cross or you’re out.
- We play with 10 official International Dodgeball Federation balls.
- Like you’d expect, if you’re hit by a ball that hasn’t yet touched the ground, you are out.
- If you catch the ball, the thrower is out.
- variation: If you catch it, the thrower is out AND a teamate comes back in.
- You can block a ball with your ball.
- You or your teamate can catch a ricocheted ball from your block (or a bounced ball off your body) and get the thrower out just like a normal catch.
- Here’s a rule we had to decide during play: If a ball is blocked with your shield ball, but you drop your ball, you are out. This is getting kind of complicated!
- Have fun dangit!
Sand Pine Park
So far we’re 15 meetup.com members strong and I know I have several friends interested that just haven’t signed up yet.
I reserved the basketball court at Sand Pine Park in Boca Raton. The city didn’t want us tearing up the Tennis Courts at Patch Reef Park, but Sand Pine will be great.
I received 10 dodgeballs in the mail today. These are “International Dodgeball Federation” dodgeballs to show everyone how serious we are about dodgeball, haha (…made in Pakistan?) Anyway, they’re soft enough not to sting, and have enough weight to throw nicely. Unfortunately, they’re kind of tough to grip with one hand, but we should be fine.
